Shale Gas: Sarkozy wants to copy America

.
Without any information or consultation, the government of Nicolas Sarkozy is offering as fodder 1% of French territory to the appetites of oil and gas.

In taking an order on the Mining Code on January 19 th and last n granting exclusive exploration license for exploitation of unconventional gas, known as "shale gas", the state delivered to the multinational Total, EGL (European Gas Limited), Hess / Toreador, and GDF Suez Energy Schuepbach, acres of land in the whole Paris Basin, in Rhone Alpes, PACA, Nord Pas de Calais, Lorraine and Franche Comté ...

In Picardy, the company Toreador, the fourth largest oil producer French, Hess and his partner should begin a program six wells in an area supposedly rich in oil shale extending over 779 km2 around Chateau-Thierry (Aisne). The U.S. Energy Schuepbach, combined GDF Suez, is party to the discovery of gas deposits in shale Lozère and Ardèche, where he holds two licenses for research on areas of 931 km2 and 4414. While Total and Devon Energy intend to excavate an area of 4327 km2 near Montelimar (Drôme) ...

And this is just the beginning for several other exploration permits will be awarded in the coming months. In all, 65 000 km2 of French will soon delivered gas to prospectors and oil shale or nearly 12% of the country!

The consequences may yet prove to be burdensome because the technique is not only polluting and dangerous for the ecosystem, but in addition, very large consumer of water.

The "horizontal hydraulic fracturing," is indeed to cause faults using a liquid sent to very strong pressure to release the oil and gas taken from the solid rock, over 2000 meters deep. Three ingredients are necessary for create these mini earthquakes: huge quantities of water, hundreds of chemicals (about 600) to attack the rock and micro-beads to keep open the cracks.

Each well can be fractured and between 15 and 20 times, fracturing each consuming between 7 and 28 million liters of water, of which only half is recovered.

Where all this water will be pumped? Again, it is far from the Grenelle process that should preserve its Article 27 water! And it will be routed ow volumes and gas extracted to reprocessing plants ?

The catastrophic example of Arkansas

United States, the results of the extraction of these fossil fuels is catastrophic: massive pollution of groundwater and air, destruction landscapes and natural environments, etc..

Over the last four months of 2010, nearly 500 earthquakes have shaken Guy in Arkansas. In 2009, 38 earthquakes have occurred across the state. The highlight of the frequency of earthquakes has been reached on December 30, before and during the death of 100,000 fish, a distance of 20 miles along the Arkansas River, including Roseville Township. The next night, 5,000 red-winged blackbirds and starlings died suddenly falling from the sky in Beebe. The culprit most likely of these three events is hydraulic fracturing, as causes of earthquakes causing the release of toxins into the environment.

A review of the history of seismic and drilling in Arkansas reveals a shocking increase in the frequency of earthquakes after an advanced drilling. The number of earthquakes in 2010 is almost equivalent to that recorded for the entire 20th century! Industry Oil and gas of course denies any correlation but the advent of hydrofraction followed by earthquakes is a story being repeated across the country.

In 1996, production of shale gas in the United States accounted for 2% of all domestic production of natural gas. Some industry analysts predict that the gas shale represent half of the domestic gas production in the next 10 years. In 2000, estimates of gas reserves were U.S. $ 177 trillion cubic feet, but they jumped up to 245 trillion cubic feet in 2008. These new technologies encourage experts to multiply by nine estimates of world reserves of gas!

For an immediate freeze on surveys of the entire French territory

exploitation in different French regions would inevitably lead to considerable damage as well as increased emissions of greenhouse gas emissions, even though our country is committed to divide by four.

South of France is particularly affected. Therefore, in the Drome Larzac through the Cevennes and the Ardeche, collectives made up of citizens, associations, unions, party Political rise against this mode of operation and denounce:

- lack of information and public debate,

- the disastrous environmental consequences (pollution of drinking water supplies, soil and basements),

- aberration energy and flight before this election is, at the fight against climate change,

- the devastation in socio-economic (agriculture , tourism ,...)

- irreversible damage to health (mutagens, reproductive toxins or carcinogens).

Three exploration permits have just been granted around Montelimar, Villeneuve de Berg in the Ardèche, Aveyron and Nant. As if this were not enough, three other permits await the signature of the Prefect of the region: one at sea off Marseilles, one in Brighton, which covers 6781 km2 and a at Gargas, in the Park Luberon , which covers 870 km2.

According to a geologist, the Fontaine de Vaucluse, France for the first source volume flow can be polluted. It is ranked fifth in the world with annual water flow of between 630 and 700 million cubic meters. The source is the only point of exit from an underground basin of 1100 km ² recovering the waters of Mont Ventoux Mountains of Vaucluse, Plateau d'Albion and the Lure mountain.

This polluted water has already been observed for the first time in Quebec where a migration of gas shale underground threatens the groundwater in Saint-Hyacinthe and Lotbinière.

For all these reasons, it is urgent to have a public debate with civil society, local and national, for a complete inventory of potential environmental, health, economic and social madness of this new industry.
